Song Jun-gil Ui Tomb
송준길의묘 · 宋浚吉의墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Song Jun-gil (1606–1672), pen name Dongchundang, a civil official and scholar of the late Joseon period. From an early age he studied the teachings of Yulgok Yi I, and at the age of twenty he became a disciple of Kim Jang-saeng. Together with King Hyojong he took part in plans for a northern expedition, but was forced from office after being secretly denounced by Kim Ja-jeom; he later became Daesaheon (Inspector-General). In 1659, as Minister of War, he prevailed over Song Si-yeol in the dispute over the length of mourning for Queen Dowager Jaui, and was appointed Right State Councillor and then Minister of Personnel, before retiring from office. A member of the same clan as Song Si-yeol and sharing his scholarly outlook, Song Jun-gil was a Neo-Confucian scholar who supported the teachings of Yi I. He was especially learned in ritual studies, and was also accomplished in calligraphy and prose; his writings include the Eorokhae and the Dongchundangjip. Song Jun-gil's tomb was originally located in Yeongi County, South Chungcheong Province, and was later moved several times, including to Gongju, before being relocated to its present site in 1700, the 26th year of King Sukjong's reign. The present tombstone was erected after this final relocation; its inscription was composed by his maternal grandson, Minister Min Jin-hu, and written in calligraphy by his great-grandson, magistrate Song Yo-jwa.
