This is a pavilion standing in the middle of Yeonhwaji Pond; the surrounding scenery is so beautiful that scholars of old would come here to recite poetry and debate scholarship. It was first built in the village of Samnak-dong and called Heupchwiheon, but after the magistrate Yun Taek dreamed of a phoenix in flight and took it as an auspicious sign, it was renamed Bonghwangnu. When it was rebuilt in 1771, the 47th year of King Yeongjo, it was renamed Phoenix Pavilion. It was later repaired in 1792, the 16th year of King Jeongjo, and in 1838, the fourth year of King Heonjong, the magistrate Yi Neung-yeon moved it to the middle of Yeonhwaji Pond. It was repaired again in 1896, the 33rd year of Emperor Gojong's reign, and once more by Gimcheon City in 1978. The building is a two-storey pavilion, three bays wide and three bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof shaped like the character 八 when viewed from the side.
