남북동 조병수 가옥 · 南北洞 趙炳秀 家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a middle-class house built in 1890. It consists of a gate quarters and a main house, forming a roughly square, courtyard-centred layout with one side left partly open. The main house is three bays wide and one and a half bays deep, with the main room and the opposite room arranged on either side of a central wooden-floored hall. A kitchen is attached beside the main room, and part of the kitchen ceiling is lowered to form a small loft accessible from the main room. In the gate quarters, centred on the main entrance, a men's quarters is placed to the east, and a single room together with a storeroom to the west, with a narrow wooden porch set in front of the room. This kind of floor plan is a typical central-region style of dwelling, a house form once common in Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces. According to the ridge-raising inscription recorded on the main purlin of the main house, it was built in 1890.
