Standing atop a cliff beside the Gangnim stream, King Taejong Pavilion is associated with an anecdote involving King Taejong of Joseon and his teacher, Ungok Won Cheon-seok. Before Taejong ascended the throne, Won Cheon-seok, disillusioned by the Strife of Princes, resigned his official post and withdrew into seclusion here. After Taejong became king, he came here in search of his former teacher, but the teacher gave a false account to an old woman who was doing her washing and fled to hide. Taejong waited at the rock the old woman had falsely pointed out to him, and when he realised his teacher did not wish to meet him, he returned. Afterwards, this place came to be called Taejongdae because King Taejong had stayed here, and a stele and stele pavilion were erected to protect the site. As a site associated with Taejong, it is a place where one can sense something of that era.
