Cheongpungsa Temple
청풍사 · 淸風祠

Cheongpungsa Temple was built to commemorate the loyalty and virtue of Ya-eun Gil Jae, posthumously honoured with the title Chungjeolgong, a loyal subject of the late Goryeo period. Gil Jae was a scholar active from the end of Goryeo into the early Joseon period; he went to the Goryeo capital of Gaegyeong and studied under several teachers, including Yi Saek, Jeong Mong-ju and Gwon Geun. He passed the state examinations more than once but did not take office, and formed a close friendship with Yi Bang-won (later King Taejong), a son of King Taejo Yi Seong-gye of Joseon, who lived in the same village. When King Taejong later summoned him, he declined, saying that a subject does not serve two kings, and he is honoured, together with Yi Saek and Jeong Mong-ju, as one of the Three Eun Scholars of Goryeo, so called because each of their pen names ends in a character meaning "recluse". At Buri-ri, Buri-myeon, Geumsan County, where Gil Jae had observed mourning for his parents in his early years, his descendants and local scholars together founded Burisa Shrine in 1671, the twelfth year of King Hyeonjong, and enshrined his spirit tablet there in 1678, the third year of King Sukjong. However, the shrine was torn down in 1741, the seventeenth year of King Yeongjo, having fallen foul of the ban on indiscriminate founding of seowon academies. Later, in 1761, the thirty-seventh year of King Yeongjo, the Geumsan county magistrate Min Baek-hong and local Confucian scholars erected on the former site a stele inscribed with the four characters "Baekse Cheongpung" (百世淸風, "a hundred generations of pure integrity"). A shrine was built again in 1804, but it suffered the further misfortune of being abolished once more in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong. In 1928 the Cheongpung Stele Pavilion, Cheongpungsa Temple and Cheongpung Seowon Academy were all restored. In front of Cheongpungsa Temple stand the Baekse Cheongpung Stele and the Jijujungnyu Stele (literally "a pillar amid the current", symbolising unwavering integrity), both testifying to the loyalty of Ya-eun Gil Jae.
