Dongmujae Hall

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDongmujae Hall is a jaesil (a memorial hall for ancestral rites) from the mid-19th century, dedicated to Ha Si-chan and built by his disciples. Ha Si-chan was born in Suseong-gu, Daegu, in 1750, the twenty-sixth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, and was learned in the study of ritual propriety, on which he also wrote books. He lived at Dongmuamnu, 50 metres west of the present site of Dongmujae, and died in 1828, the twenty-eighth year of King Sunjo; such was his renown that he never lacked disciples. Within the Dongmujae compound stands the jaesil hall itself, with Gyeongdeoksa Shrine set behind it to the left, enclosed by a separate wall. The hall measures three kan (bays) across the front and one and a half kan to the side, with a wooden floor at its centre. The roof is a gable roof, shaped like the Chinese character for 'person' (人) when viewed from the side.
