A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally instruct the local populace. Yongdamhyanggyo was founded at the foot of Yonggangsan Mountain in 1391, the third year of King Gongyang of Goryeo. It was subsequently repaired on several occasions, and in 1998 it was relocated to its present site because of the construction of Yongdam Dam. Daeseongjeon Hall is where memorial rites are held for Confucius and other sages. It measures three kan across the front and three kan to the side, with the left section partitioned into two kan. The roof is a gable roof, shaped like the Chinese character for 'person' (人) when viewed from the side, and the decorative bracket sets supporting the eaves are in the dapo style, set both above the columns and between them. In the Joseon period the school received land, enslaved labourers and books from the state to teach its students, but today its educational function has disappeared and only its ritual function remains.
