Gwiraejeong Pavilion was built by Yi Goeng (1414-1516) after he retired from office and came to Andong in 1513, the eighth year of King Jungjong of Joseon. Its name is said to come from its close resemblance to the sentiment of "Gwigeoraesa" ("The Return"), a poem by the Chinese poet Tao Yuanming. Yi Goeng passed the state examination at the age of twenty-five and went on to hold various official posts, but was caught up in a power struggle and was once sent into exile. Gwiraejeong is a T-shaped building with two bays at the front and four at the rear, roofed with a hip-and-gable roof that forms a shape like the Chinese character for "eight" when seen from the side. Its distinctive features are the angular columns used everywhere except around the floor, and the wedge-shaped columns that remain at the windows. The pavilion preserves poems by about thirty people, including Yi Hyeon-bo, Yi U, Yi Sik and Yun Hwon.
