Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese paintings hang to the left and right of Myeongbujeon Hall and comprise the Ten Kings Painting (Siwangdo), the Day and Night Messenger Paintings, and the Guardian Kings Paintings. The Ten Kings Painting is distinctive in that four kings on each side are painted together on a single panel, while the remaining one king on each side is painted on a separate panel and hung apart. The Ten Kings are the ten great kings who judge the dead in myeongbu, the underworld realm of the dead: King Jingwang, King Chogang, King Songje, King Ogwan, King Yeomra, King Byeonseong, King Taesan, King Pyeongdeung, King Dosi and King Odojeollyun. In the Anyangam Myeongbujeon Ten Kings Painting, the first king (Jingwang), third king (Songje), fifth king (Yeomra), seventh king (Taesan) and ninth king (Dosi) are placed on the viewer's right, while the second king (Chogang), fourth king (Ogwan), sixth king (Byeonseong), eighth king (Pyeongdeung) and tenth king (Odojeollyun) are placed on the viewer's left. According to the inscription, the Ten Kings Painting was painted in 1922 by the monk-painters Gosan, Chukbak, Haksong, Hangnul and others, and its style closely follows the iconography of Ten Kings paintings produced in the Seoul and Gyeonggi region at the end of the 19th century. The Day and Night Messenger Paintings and the Guardian Kings Paintings hang beside the Ten Kings Painting: the Day Messenger and a Guardian King are enshrined on the right, and the Night Messenger and a Guardian King on the left. Each painting is divided by a line down the middle, with an underworld messenger depicted on one side and a guardian king on the other. As there is no inscription, the exact date of production and the painter are unknown, but since this too is an iconographic type that was popular only in the Seoul and Gyeonggi region from the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, it is thought to have been made around the same time as the Ten Kings Painting.
