Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone Shakyamuni Buddha triad enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall of Mahasa Temple, with the Shakyamuni Buddha at the centre and a bodhisattva figure placed on either side. The Buddha sits in the full lotus posture with the head tilted slightly forward and the back held straight, both hands resting on the knees. Small spiral curls cover the head, with no clear distinction made between the hair and the usnisa, the cranial protuberance, while a finial is shown at the very crown of the head and another partway up it. The square face has swollen eyelids, a small straight nose, and thin, small lips. A single wrinkle line is carved beneath the chin, and the neck bears three narrow folds known as samdo. The chest is rendered as slightly convex. The hairline, eyebrows and moustache are painted malachite green, and the lips are red. The robe is worn in a modified style covering both shoulders, with the outer robe draped loosely over an inner half-sleeve garment, the cuffs of both sleeves turned back at the wrists. The lower garment is pleated into evenly spaced, fan-shaped folds. The two attendant bodhisattva figures are executed in almost the same technique as the Buddha. However, the hair flowing down from beneath their crowns, which wraps around the ears and falls onto the shoulders, is painted in black lacquer with the edges finished in malachite green. The chest wrap in front of the chest is rendered with several layers of folds, a technique commonly seen in late Joseon sculpture. The stone Shakyamuni Buddha triad of Daeungjeon Hall at Mahasa Temple was made in the late Joseon period. It is well preserved and is therefore valuable as material for examining the style and lineage of Buddhist art in the Busan and Gyeongnam region during the late Joseon period.
