This is a memorial stele and gate pavilion erected by the royal court to honour the extraordinary filial devotion of Ha Gwang-sin, who served as Vice Minister in the Goryeo dynasty. Ha Gwang-sin was the grandson of Ha Yong, son of Ha Heum, a Grand Admiral of China's Song dynasty who settled and lived in Korea from the Goryeo period onward. Ha Gwang-sin is said to have shown filial devotion from childhood, and a legend survives that in the depths of winter, amid biting cold winds, he managed to obtain peaches for his parents. Hearing of Ha Gwang-sin's extraordinary filial piety, King Chungsuk (1327) had a red memorial gate erected in the village where Ha Gwang-sin lived, to honour his filial conduct, and exempted his descendants from corvee labour in perpetuity. This practice continued into the Joseon dynasty, and in the sixth year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon (1896) an official document was issued exempting his descendants from all taxes and labour duties. The original document is still carefully kept today by his descendant Ha Jae-hyeong. The memorial gate pavilion was rebuilt in the fifth year of King Jeongjo (1781), but was moved to its present site when the Gyeongbu railway line was laid during the Japanese colonial period. The epitaph was composed by Hwang Gyeong-won, who held the posts of Minister of the Ministry of Personnel and Daejehak of the Hongmungwan, and the calligraphy was written by Yi Yak-chae, who held the rank of Tonghun Daebu and the post of Jipyeong in the Office of the Inspector General. It is maintained today, in annual rotation, by members of the Dalseong Ha clan living in Manchon-dong. The building measures one bay across the front and one bay to the side, with the memorial stele placed at its centre. The roof is a gabled roof shaped like the Chinese character for "person" when viewed from the side. It is a building that well illustrates the form of memorial gate pavilions of the late Joseon period.
