Stupa Group of Baegunsa Temple, Goesan
괴산 백운사 승탑군 · 槐山 白雲寺 僧塔群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA budo, or stupa, symbolically represents a monk's grave and enshrines the monk's remains or relics. This stupa field at Baegunsa Temple contains five stupas in all. Each consists of a bell-shaped body stone set on a low pedestal, and four of the five are topped with either a square roof stone or a distinctively shaped roof stone of the kind seen on traditional houses. The roof stones bear dragon-head ornaments at each corner and a bud-shaped finial at the top; the absence of roof-tile ridge lines on the sloping surfaces indicates that they date from a somewhat later period. The stupas largely retain their original form, and apart from one erected in 1955 by the monk Songunje, the remaining four are all said to have been built during the Joseon period.
