This hermitage was built in the first year of King Hyojong of Joseon (1650) by Kim Jung-jeong, pen-named Gunggudang, who abandoned his official post during the Manchu invasion and lived in seclusion, in order to teach Confucian students. In the twenty-seventh year of King Sunjo (1827), as access was made difficult by the water, Kim Sang-won is said to have moved it to its present site across the water. The building has three bays across the front and three to the side, and stands on a rock outcrop. The roof is a hip-and-gable roof shaped like the Chinese character for "eight" when viewed from the side, with a raised-floor form.
