Andong Angi-dong Three-story Stone Pagoda
안동안기동삼층석탑 · 安東安寄洞三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis three-story stone pagoda stands within a private house in Angi-dong. It has a three-story body set on a two-tier base. The lower base has been lost and replaced with cement, while the upper base has pillar-shaped carvings at the corners and in the centre of each side. The body stones of each storey likewise have pillar-shaped carvings at their corners, and in particular the first-storey body stone has a square gamsil (a niche for enshrining a Buddha image) set into it. The thick roof stones have short eaves, giving a steep slope, with the four corners turned sharply upward. The number of support tiers carved on the underside of the roof stones decreases going up: six tiers on the first storey, five on the second, and four on the third. At the top sits a round stone shaped like a bokbal (an upturned-bowl-shaped ornament), newly made and placed there at a later date. Overall the pagoda follows the general style of Unified Silla stone pagodas, but the style of the roof stones and the irregular number of support tiers on their undersides suggest it was built in the early Goryeo period. The Seated Stone Buddha of Angi-dong (Treasure) stands nearby, suggesting the two were once relics of the same temple, and this pagoda provides important material for research on Buddhist sculpture in the Andong region at the end of Unified Silla and the beginning of Goryeo.
