Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis guardian deities painting is currently enshrined to the left of the main altar in the Cheonobaekbuljeon Hall, the Hall of the Thousand Five Hundred Buddhas. According to its production record, it was made in 1936 by An Byeong-mun, Kim Il-cha and others. In composition the painting is divided into two registers. The upper register centres on Jeseokcheon and Beomcheon, while the lower register is densely filled with some fifty guardian deities centred on Witaecheon. Around Jeseokcheon and Beomcheon in the upper register, deities including the Sun Palace Prince and the Moon Palace Prince, together with boy and girl attendants playing musical instruments, are arranged in symmetrical groups facing one another. In the lower register, Witaecheon is surrounded by eighteen armoured warrior deities. Along the upper edge of the painting, decorative elements such as banners adorned with ornate jewels are depicted, giving the whole a highly splendid impression. Production records survive at the lower left and right of the painting: the one on the right concerns the making of this guardian deities painting, while the one on the left concerns the making of the Thousand Five Hundred Buddhas.
