Jangdopodae is the site of a former artillery battery. In 1879, the 16th year of Emperor Gojong, after observing that Japan was surveying Korea's west coast in search of a port to open, the court anticipated that Japan would demand Incheon as a candidate for opening; in response, Eoyeongdaejang (Commander of the Royal Guard) Sin Jeong-hui and Yi Gyeong-ha, the Yusu (governor) of Ganghwa, established Hwadojin along the coast of Incheon and Bupyeong and built gun batteries there, with this site constructed at the same time. In 1999, examination of the original Hwadojindo (Map of Hwadojin) confirmed that three gun emplacements had been installed here. Today no trace of the battery remains, though records state that three gun platforms had been installed at the site.
