삼강행실도 · 三綱行實圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Samganghaengsildo is a book compiling the exemplary conduct of loyal subjects, filial sons and virtuous women, intended as models for rulers and subjects, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives. It was compiled by order of King Sejo, and was first printed from woodblocks in 1511, the 6th year of King Jungjong, with a Hangeul translation added. Among its contents, 35 filial sons are selected, each of their stories illustrated with a painting and accompanied by a eulogy and a poem; the preface at the front of the book was written by Gwon Chae in 1512, the 7th year of King Jungjong, at the king's command. It is a valuable resource for understanding the ethics and values of the Joseon period, and is of great help to research into the history of the Korean language and the history of traditional painting.
