A hyanggyo is a public educational institution established in the provinces during the Joseon period, where memorial rites were held for Confucius, the scholar of China's Spring and Autumn period, and for various sages, and where local people were educated. A hyanggyo consists of the Daeseongjeon, which enshrines Confucius; the Dongmu and Seomu, which enshrine former sages; the Myeongnyundang, the hall where students studied; and the Dongjae and Seojae, the dormitories where they lodged. Yanggeunhyanggyo was built in the reign of King Jungjong, but has since been rebuilt and repaired many times, so that its form has changed considerably. The Myeongnyundang, the educational space, and the Dongjae and Seojae, the student dormitories, are placed at the front, while the Daeseongjeon, the ritual space, stands at the rear, so that the space for study lies in front and the space for rites behind. Unlike most hyanggyo in this region, which place the Dongjae and Seojae in front of the Myeongnyundang, Yanggeunhyanggyo sets them behind it, which distinguishes it from other hyanggyo. The Daeseongjeon has a front of three bays and a side of two bays, with a matbae (gabled) roof that forms the shape of the character 人 ("person") when viewed from the side. The Dongmu and Seomu each measure three bays across the front and one bay deep, with matbae roofs. The Myeongnyundang has a front of four bays and a side of two bays, with the easternmost bay fitted with ondol underfloor heating. The dormitories, the Dongjae and Seojae, each measure four bays across the front and one bay deep, with matbae roofs. In the Joseon period the state provided land, enslaved people and books to support the teaching of students, but today the educational function has disappeared, leaving only the ritual function.
