Ipseoksa Temple Stone Pagoda
입석사석탑 · 立石寺石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda at Ipseoksa Temple had collapsed and was later re-erected; it appears that components from two separate stone pagodas have been mixed together. The components consist of two thick, square lotus-petal pedestal stones, one thin lotus-petal pedestal stone, three body stones of the pagoda's main shaft carved with pillar shapes on each face, and four square slab stones. Judging from the carving of the lotus-petal decoration and the craftsmanship of the body stones, it is presumed to be a work of the early Goryeo period. A story is also handed down that after King Taejong of Joseon (r. 1400–1418) ascended the throne, he repeatedly summoned his childhood teacher Un-gok Won Cheon-seok, but Won did not respond and instead withdrew into seclusion on Chiaksan Mountain, never appearing again; it is said that, thinking of him, the king had this pagoda erected.
