Painting of Three Buddha Assemblies of Anyangam Hermitage
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This painting is currently enshrined on the wall of the Yeombuldang, the Buddha-invocation hall, at Anyangam Hermitage. As it bears no votive inscription recording its production, the exact date and the painter are not known, but it is presumed to have been made in 1942, when the hall was rebuilt. The iconography places Sakyamuni Buddha at the centre, with Bhaisajyaguru, the Buddha of Medicine, to the proper right and Amitabha Buddha to the proper left. Between the main figures, the Ten Great Disciples, the Four Heavenly Kings and bodhisattvas are shown seated in a long row across the horizontal composition, giving an overall impression that is simple yet well balanced. The rendering of the books in the lower corners of the painting shows traces of the folk-painting style. The colours are dominated by blue and white, with gold pigment used in many places. Gold pigment was not used up to the 18th century, but came into wide use from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, and the gold pigment used in this work helps to suggest its approximate date of production.
