Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo was a public educational institution established in the provinces during the Joseon period, where memorial rites were held for Confucius, the scholar of China's Spring and Autumn period, and for various other sages, and where local people were educated. A hyanggyo was made up of the Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall enshrining Confucius; the Dongmu and Seomu, shrine halls for other worthies; the Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall where students studied; and the Dongjae and Seojae, the dormitories where they lodged. Jipyeonghyanggyo was first built in 1773, though no detailed records of its construction survive. The site occupies sloping ground, with the outer gate at the front, the Myeongnyundang and the Dongjae and Seojae as the teaching space, an inner gate, and the Daeseongjeon, the memorial shrine, at the rear, so that the space for study lies in front and the space for ritual behind. The Daeseongjeon measures three bays across the front and two bays in depth, and its interior has umul-maru flooring, a traditional Korean wooden-floor style laid in a well-shaped pattern. The Myeongnyundang measures five bays across the front and two bays in depth; its central three bays have umul-maru flooring, while the bay on either side has an ondol, or underfloor-heated, floor. The roof is a hip-and-gable roof, which forms the shape of the Chinese character for 'eight' when viewed from the side. Both the inner and outer gates take the form of a sotsul-sammun, a three-bay gate in which the roof over the centre bay is raised higher than those on either side, and a hongsalmun, a red-painted gate topped with spikes, stands in front of the outer gate. During the Joseon period, the state provided land, slaves and books to support the education of students here, but today the school no longer functions as an educational institution and retains only its function as a site of memorial rites.
