This is a seowon, a Confucian academy, enshrining the spirit tablet of An Cheo-sun—who fell victim to the Gimyo sahwa, the political purge of 1519, during the reign of King Jungjong (r. 1506–1544)—together with those of Jeong Hwan, Jeong Hwang and Yi Dae-byeong. An Cheo-sun was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period who worked to develop local schools. Yeongcheon Confucian Academy was established in 1619, the eleventh year of King Gwanghaegun, and in 1686, the twelfth year of King Sukjong, the state bestowed a royal plaque on it, making it a saaek seowon, an academy granted royal charter. It was demolished in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, but was rebuilt by descendants after Liberation and survives to the present day. The shrine hall is a building of three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a gable roof shaped like the character 人 when seen from the side. The lecture hall, used for study, is likewise built with a gable roof and measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side. Among some thirty seowon in the vicinity, this academy is said to be the only one to have received a royal plaque, and owing to its prestige, outstanding scholars are said to have flocked to it from far and wide.
