Seven Stars Painting of Anyangam Hermitage
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This painting, enshrined behind the Chiseonggwang-yeorae (the Buddha of Blazing Light, who presides over the stars) in Geumnyunjeon Hall, was produced in 1930 by monk-painters including Gosan, Boeung, Haksong and Dagak. It is centred on the Chiseonggwang-yeorae, flanked by the Bodhisattvas of Sunlight and Moonlight, with constellation deities and their various attendants arranged around them. Seven-star paintings from the 19th century onward characteristically depict the Old Man Star with a markedly high, domed crown of the head, and here too the Old Man Star appears in the upper left. The central Chiseonggwang-yeorae is shown with both a central usnisha jewel and a crown usnisha jewel on the head, and is distinguished by a five-coloured halo and seven transformation Buddhas around it.
