동락서원강당 · 東洛書院講堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seowon, a Confucian academy, housing a spirit tablet to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Jang Hyeon-gwang, pen name Yeoheon, a scholar of the reign of King Injo of Joseon (r. 1623–1649). Jang Hyeon-gwang was a civil official who served as Right Chamchan of the Uijeongbu, the State Council, under King Injo. The academy was founded by his disciples in 1655, the sixth year of King Hyojong, and in 1676, the second year of King Sukjong, it received a royal name-plaque from the court and became a saaek seowon, an academy formally chartered by the state. In 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong, it was torn down under Heungseon Daewongun's decree abolishing seowon, but in 1971 the whole academy complex was rebuilt. The buildings within the grounds include the three-kan Gyeongdeoksa shrine, the five-kan Jungjeongdang lecture hall, the Dongjae and Seojae dormitories of three kan each, the Sinmun spirit gate, a three-kan Munnu gate pavilion, and a four-kan Gosa storage hall. Of these, the Jungjeongdang, the lecture hall, has a wooden floor at its centre flanked by rooms on either side; the floor is used as a gathering place. Memorial rites are held here every year in the second and eighth months of the lunar calendar.
