Beomeosa Temple Wooden Shakyamuni Buddha Wipae
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a wooden wipae, a spirit tablet, for Shakyamuni Buddha kept at Beomeosa Temple. It is a kind of bulmyeongpae, a tablet inscribed with the name of a Buddha or bodhisattva and enshrined on the altar, mounted on a stand known as a wimokdae. In the way its body, with a scalloped, flower-shaped outline, is fitted into a lotus-patterned pedestal, and in its overall size, it closely resembles the Beomeosa Temple Wooden Tablet to the Three Jewels of the Ten Directions (a Busan cultural heritage material). It differs only in that clouds and dragons are carved on its left and right edges, that its forehead panel bears the dedicatory inscription 'Seat of Shakyamuni Buddha' written in gold powder, and that its pedestal is made up of a lower base carved with ten inverted lotus petals and an upper base carved with ten upward-facing lotus petals. Although the surface colouring of the Beomeosa Temple wooden Shakyamuni Buddha wipae is less meticulously applied than that of the Three Jewels tablet, together the two are valued as precious material for understanding one aspect of late-Joseon Buddhist ritual implements.
