Seated Seokjoyaksa Temple Buddha of Boansa Temple, Goesan
괴산 보안사 석조약사여래좌상 · 槐山 寶安寺 石造藥師如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seated stone Buddha is enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall of Boansa Temple, in Hyogeun-ri, Cheongan-myeon, Goesan-gun, North Chungcheong Province. The halo and pedestal no longer survive, but the statue itself is not greatly damaged. The shoulders appear shrunken in proportion to the face, and the chin is lowered, showing a general coarsening of the carving technique. Judging from the position of the hands, the figure appears to have held a medicine bowl above the left hand, now lost, suggesting that it represents Yaksayeorae, the Medicine Buddha. The work displays the subdued, constrained sculptural style typical of the late Goryeo period.
