Stone Lantern of Gwaneumsa Temple, Changnyeong
창녕 관음사 석등 · 昌寧 觀音寺 石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone lantern stands at Gwaneumsa Temple. It originally stood on the former site of Bogwangsa Temple but was later held by a Japanese collector before being moved to its present location in May 1928. From the bottom up, it is built of a small lower base stone, an elongated octagonal central pillar and an upper base stone, topped by a square light chamber in which the flame was lit, and a roof stone. The light chamber has four windows cut into it to let the light spread outward, and the roof stone is handsomely decorated with projecting carvings at its four corners and in between. Atop the roof stone rises a large round finial, its surface carved in relief with a cloud-like design. With every part except the white central pillar tinged blue, the lantern has a distinctive atmosphere, and is presumed to date from the late Unified Silla or early Goryeo period.
