Seongyuseutinosin School was built between 1913 and 1914 using Chinese bricklayers, on the orders of Bishop An Se-hwa, the first bishop of the Diocese of Daegu. In 1912, to prepare for the school's construction, Bishop An invited Father Poisnel, who had taken part in building Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, to draw up the building plan, and appealed for financial support from Catholic communities around the world. In September 1913 an anonymous believer in Shanghai, China, sent a large donation on condition that the school be dedicated to Saint Justin, and Seo Sang-don, a Catholic of Daegu, donated the land, allowing construction to begin. The work was carried out by Chinese craftsmen, and the master carpenter was a man who had worked on the building of the French consulate. As a historic building embodying the history of Catholicism in Daegu, it is an excellent Western-style structure, close to the Romanesque and Gothic styles, built of finely laid brick. It is also significant as the building through which French priests introduced brick-making and bricklaying techniques, together with Western modern architectural styles, to the people of Daegu.
