Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Songhyeon Reservoir was Incheon's first waterworks facility and urban-planning facility. Following the completion in 1905 of the design for the Gyeongin Waterworks by Dr. Nakajima, construction began in November 1906 and was completed in 1908. In October 1910 the water purification facility at the Noryangjin Reservoir was also completed, and water supply from it began in December of that year. The Songhyeon Reservoir stands at an elevation of 56.8 m. Its scale comprises a site area of 36,780 m² and a reservoir area of 5,000 m², with three reservoir tanks. The surviving reservoir structures are the valve chamber, a flight of 23 steps of long, dressed granite stones, and an iron main gate. The gate is built with concrete pillars set on granite bases, finished with square and round granite capitals. The valve chamber is a structure that protects the shut-off valve controlling the stoppage and pressure regulation of the distribution pipes from the reservoir; it is cylindrical in shape and built as a single, unreinforced concrete structure.
