Buncheong Ware Jeollado Painting Myeong Jar (Jeollado Painting)
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Buncheong ware is a ceramic of the early Joseon period, made by coating a grey or greyish-black clay body with refined white slip before glazing and firing. This jar, 43.4 cm in height with a mouth diameter of 16.0 cm, represents the typical form of buncheong jars favoured in the Joseon period. It has a rim that flares slightly outward, a short straight neck, swelling shoulders and an elongated body. In particular, the characters "全ㅅ道" (Jeolla-do) incised on the body show that the Jeolla-do region, home to the Chunghyo-dong kilns, was a production centre for sgraffito (johwa) and incised (bakji) buncheong ware.
