Dongnakjeong Pavilion, Okcheon
옥천 독락정 · 沃川 獨樂亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDongnakjeong is a pavilion built in 1607, the 40th year of King Seonjo of Joseon, by Ju Mong-deuk, who held the military rank of Jeolchung Janggun and the post of Jungchubusa, a deputy commissioner in the Jungchubu, a central government office. Because of the beautiful natural scenery around it, the pavilion served as a gathering place for many scholars, and in later generations it was used as a place where Confucian students pursued their studies. It was rebuilt in 1772, the 48th year of King Yeongjo, and has been repaired several times since. The building measures two bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hipped-and-gable (paljak) roof forming the shape of the character 八 (eight) when seen from the side. On the front of the building hangs a plaque reading "Dongnakjeong," written by Sim Hu, the county magistrate at the time, and on its wooden floor hang more than ten framed records, including a yulsi (regulated-verse) record by Song Geun-su.
