This stele honours the loyal spirit of the Great Master Yeonggyu, who took up arms as a monk general and died in battle trying to save the country during the Japanese invasion of 1592. Yeonggyu (?-1592), on the outbreak of the Japanese invasion in the 25th year of King Seonjo's reign (1592), wept for three days and then became a monk-soldier general of his own accord. He gathered several hundred monk soldiers and, together with the government army, attacked the Japanese forces at Cheongju fortress. He then joined Jo Heon in the Battle of Geumsan, where he fought valiantly and was killed. This event went on to spark the rise of monk armies across the whole country. The stele was erected in the fifth month of the fifth year of King Sukjong's reign (1839) by Jo Chwi-yeong, magistrate of Geumsan county. In 1940 the Japanese colonial authorities destroyed the pavilion that had sheltered the stele and buried the stele itself; after liberation it was dug up again and re-erected.
