Deogyang Village School, Okcheon
옥천 덕양서당 · 沃川 德陽書堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis village school was founded by Yu Sik (1586–1650), who served as tutor to Prince Inpyeong during the reign of King Injo of Joseon (r. 1623–1649). Yu Sik was a 24th-generation descendant of the clan founder Yu Geom-pil and was a highly learned scholar. Also known as Deogyang Seowon (a Confucian academy), the school taught loyalty and filial piety, and has stood in its present form since repairs carried out in 1895, the 32nd year of Emperor Gojong. The building measures six bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the Chinese character for 'eight' (八). The wooden plaque reading 'Deogyang Village School' is in the own hand of Song Geun-su, and Song Byeong-seon's 'Record of the Village School' hangs in the main hall.
