This stele was erected in 1878, the 15th year of King Gojong, to honour the loyalty and righteousness of Gwon Jong, magistrate of Geumsan, who died a heroic death defending Geumsan against Japanese invaders during the Imjin War. Gwon Jong (d. 1592) set up camp on the bank of the Gaeti River and led fewer than 200 soldiers into battle to stop the Japanese forces attempting to cross it. In this battle he fought bravely and cut down countless enemy soldiers, but he and his son Gwon Jun both died in combat. The stele of martyrdom measures 176 cm in height, 51 cm in width and 40 cm in depth. Its inscription was composed by Yi Seung-bo, Daejehak (chief academician) of the Hongmungwan, and written out by Gwon Jeong-ho, Gwon Jong's eleventh-generation descendant. In 1941 the Japanese colonial authorities attempted to destroy it, but it was preserved through the protection of the local Confucian community and his descendants. It nonetheless suffered the ordeal of being buried underground, before being re-erected after liberation; in 1974 a stele pavilion was built to protect it.
