KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This triad is enshrined as the principal image at the centre of the front of Cheonobaekbuljeon Hall (Hall of a Thousand Five Hundred Buddhas), and comprises a seated statue of Amitabha Buddha flanked by two standing attendant bodhisattvas. According to the Anyangamji (Record of Anyangam Hermitage), it was made in 1936 by the monks Boeung, Seokseong and Ungok. The seated Amitabha Buddha has a square face and a large head, with a broad, flattened usnisha (the cranial protuberance symbolising enlightenment) bearing both a jewel at its centre and another at its crown. The flanking standing bodhisattvas are notable for the folded pleats of their skirts. The triad well illustrates the iconographic characteristics of Buddhist statues of the first half of the twentieth century.
