Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele commemorates the Battle of Ichi, a victory led by General Gwon Yul during the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War). Ichi Pass crosses the middle slopes of Daedunsan Mountain and is a strategically important route leading to Wanju in North Jeolla Province. During the Imjin War, some 20,000 Japanese troops, who had been sweeping victoriously through Gyeongsang and Chungcheong provinces, tried to cross the pass to advance into the Honam region in search of provisions. General Gwon Yul, who had already secured the route, led about 1,500 soldiers in a fight to the death and annihilated the enemy, blocking their advance into Honam. This victory came before the Battles of Haengju and Jinju and was the first land victory of the Imjin War. In 1866, the third year of King Gojong, the Ichi Daecheopbi stele and the Daecheopsa shrine were erected together at Sangga-ri, Geumseong-myeon, to commemorate the victory, but they were blown up by the Japanese colonial authorities in June 1944. The present stele was re-erected in 1964 on a hillside in Muksan-ri, Jinsan-myeon, overlooking Ichi Pass, re-carved with the inscription originally composed by Song Byeong-seon (pen name Yeonjae) and written by Song Seong-yong.
