This group of statues fills the rear of the Amitabha triad enshrined in the Cheonobaekbuljeon (Hall of One Thousand Five Hundred Buddhas), each modelled in a form similar to the principal Amitabha Buddha image. They are extremely small, each about 17.9 cm in total height, numbering 1,500 figures in all. Taken together, the inscription (hwagi) on the Sinjungdo (painting of guardian deities) and the records in the Anyangam-ji (Chronicle of Anyangam Hermitage) indicate that production of these 1,500 Buddha statues began in 1933 and that the project was completed in 1937. The 1,500 Buddha statues of Anyangam Hermitage are almost the only example of their kind in Korea, and as plaster (seokgobul) Buddha images they are also rare survivals from an early period of the technique, offering a fine illustration of the multiple-Buddha devotion (dabul sinang) widespread in the first half of the twentieth century.
