A hyanggyo (local Confucian school) was a public educational institution established in the provinces during the Joseon dynasty, where memorial rites were held for Confucius, the scholar of China's Spring and Autumn period, and other sages, and where local people received education. A hyanggyo comprises Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall enshrining Confucius; Dongmu and Seomu, the eastern and western shrine halls enshrining other worthies; Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall where students studied; and Dongjae and Seojae, the eastern and western dormitories where they lodged. Juksanhyanggyo was first built in 1533, but little is recorded of its history after that date. On its sloping site, the front holds Myeongnyundang — built here without the usual flanking Dongjae and Seojae study quarters — together with the Naesammun (inner three-bay gate), forming the educational space; the rear holds Daeseongjeon and the Dongmu and Seomu, forming the ritual space, so that the educational area lies to the front and the ritual area to the rear. Daeseongjeon measures three bays across the front and two bays in depth, with a matbae (gable) roof. Dongmu and Seomu each measure three bays across the front and one bay in depth, likewise with matbae roofs. Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, measures three bays across the front and two bays in depth; it sits slightly to the left of Daeseongjeon's central axis and has a paljak (hipped-and-gabled) roof. The Oesammun (outer three-bay gate) likewise sits to the right of Myeongnyundang's central axis and takes the form of a sotdaesammun, a three-bay gate whose central bay is raised a level higher than the two flanking bays. In front of the Oesammun stands a hongsalmun, a red-painted spiked gate. In the Joseon dynasty, the school received land, slaves and books from the state to support the education of its students, but today its educational function has disappeared and only its ritual function remains.
