Imsil Local Confucian School Daeseongjeon Hall
임실향교대성전 · 任實鄕校大成殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and edify the local people. The original location of Imsil Hyanggyo is not known, but in 1413, the thirteenth year of King Taejong, it was rebuilt at its present site and has since undergone repairs on several occasions. The buildings that survive today include Daeseongjeon Hall, together with Myeongnyundang Hall and the east and west study halls (Dongjae and Seojae), as well as the entrance gates: the inner and outer three-gate structures (Naesammun and Oesammun) and the Hongsalmun, a red-painted spiked gate. Daeseongjeon Hall enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages and is where memorial rites are held. It measures three bays across the front and four bays along the side, with a gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character for 'person'. During the Joseon dynasty the state provided land, slaves and books to support the teaching of students there, but today the educational function has ceased and only the memorial-rite function remains.
