Aranggak is a shrine built to honour the chastity of Yun Dong-ok, the only daughter of the magistrate of Miryang and a woman noted for her beauty, during the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon (r. 1545–1567). Lured out by her wet nurse to view the moon at Yeongnamnu Pavilion, Yun Dong-ok was accosted there by a tongin (a low-ranking local government attendant) named Ju Gi, who tried to force himself upon her; she took her own life to preserve her chastity. The people of the region, wishing to console Arang's spirit and hold her up as a model for women, have held a memorial rite for her every year on 16 April.
