Taegosa Temple is said to have been founded by the Great Master Wonhyo during the reign of King Sinmun of Silla. The surrounding scenery is said to be so magnificent that Wonhyo, on first seeing the temple site, danced for joy for three days. The temple was rebuilt during the Goryeo dynasty by the monk Taego, and reconstructed again during the Joseon dynasty by the monk Jinmuk. It is also well known as the place where the Joseon-period scholar Song Si-yeol, pen name Uam, studied. The buildings on the temple grounds were lost to fire during the Korean War in 1950, and the Daeungjeon Hall was restored in 1976 together with the Muryangsujeon Hall, the Gwaneumjeon Hall and others.
