Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pavilion protects a stele recording the achievements of Byeon Gye-ryang, a civil official of the early Joseon period, together with those of his father, Minister Byeon Ok-ran, and his elder brother, Chundang Byeon Jung-ryang. Byeon Gye-ryang (1369–1430) held a number of important posts, including Minister of Rites, in the early years of the founding of Joseon. Especially gifted in literary composition, he served for more than twenty years as Daejehak, the senior scholarly post responsible for drafting diplomatic documents. During the reign of King Sejong (r. 1418–1450) he took part in compiling the Veritable Records of King Taejo and in revising the Goryeosa (History of Goryeo). Byeon Ok-ran (1322–1395) held the post of panseo, or minister, in three different ministries at the end of Goryeo, and, by supporting the enthronement of Yi Seong-gye, became a meritorious subject of the founding of Joseon. Byeon Jung-ryang (1352–1398) served as Jwaseungji, a royal secretary, under King Taejo of Joseon and was skilled in poetry and prose. This is a small pavilion enclosed by a wall, also known as the Stele Pavilion of the Three Worthies of the Byeon Family. It was erected by their descendants in 1946, who chose this site, their hometown, in order to honour their ancestors' achievements and commemorate traces of the past.
