This is the tomb of Yu Hyeok-yeon (1616–1680), known by his pen name Yadang, a military official of the late Joseon period. Born in Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do, he showed outstanding talent from childhood and grew up in a family with a long tradition of military service. He passed the military examination in 1644, the 22nd year of King Injo, and went on to hold key posts such as Samdo Sugun Tongjesa, Naval Commander of the Three Provinces, Minister of Works and Minister of Justice, handling difficult affairs with great skill. Implicated in factional strife arising from the Rites Controversy, he was stripped of his office and, in 1680, the 16th year of King Sukjong, exiled to Yeonghae in Gyeongsang-do. He also excelled in the martial arts, consistently placing first in military examinations, and showed outstanding ability in strategy and military administration. He advocated the use of the hwacha, a mobile multiple-rocket launcher, and strongly promoted the study of military texts, and was also skilled in calligraphy and in painting bamboo. His tomb, in Pyeongchon-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, was moved to its present site in 1681, the 17th year of King Sukjong, and in 1924 a sindobi, a stele set up beside the path near a tomb to commemorate the lifetime achievements of a king or senior official, was erected there. The epitaph on the tombstone was composed by Yi Ui-guk, and the inscription was written by Yu Seok-u, a county magistrate and his ninth-generation descendant.
