Hyeonpung Gwak Ssi Sibi Memorial Gate Pavilion
현풍곽씨십이정려각 · 玄風郭氏十二旌閭閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site houses the commemorative steles of twenty-eight members of the Hyeonpung Gwak clan who upheld the three bonds (samgang), the fundamental Confucian moral relationships; of these, twelve were honoured with a royal commendation (jeongnyeo) between 1598, the 31st year of King Seonjo's reign, and the reign of King Yeongjo (r. 1567–1608), and are now enshrined together in one place. In the Joseon dynasty, those who faithfully upheld the three bonds — the proper relations between ruler and subject, father and child, and husband and wife — were commended and honoured by the state. For twelve people from a single clan (the Gwak clan) in one village to receive such commendation was highly unusual; the reasons for each commendation are as follows. When Gwak Jun, magistrate of Aneum County, died in battle together with his two sons at Hwangseoksanseong Fortress during the Japanese invasions, his daughter-in-law and his married daughter took their own lives to follow their husbands, and King Seonjo commended them. When the four sons of Gwak Jae-hun protected their ailing father from Japanese soldiers during the invasions, King Seonjo commended them. When Lady Yi of Gwangju, wife of Gwak Jae-gi, encountered Japanese soldiers during the invasions and drowned herself to preserve her chastity, King Seonjo commended her; and when Lady Bak of Miryang, wife of Gwak Hong-won, gave her life to protect her husband when bandits broke in intending to kill him, King Hyeonjong commended her. When Lady Gwon of Andong, wife of Gwak Su-yeong, prayed to die in her husband's place as he lay gravely ill, and then, when he died, refused food and died following him, King Hyeonjong commended her. The building has a frontage of twelve bays and a depth of two bays, with a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof forming a figure like the character 八 when seen from the side. The bracket sets supporting the eaves are in the jusimpo style, set only above the columns. Inside the pavilion are two steles and twelve commemorative plaques. The building and plaques themselves are of recent date, but the gathering of twelve memorial shrines in one place is highly unusual and constitutes an important heritage asset.
