Seonjeong Stele of Yangju Fortress
양주성 선정비 · 梁株星 善政碑

This stele honours the virtuous governance of Yang Ju-seong, who served as Cheomjeolje-sa (garrison commander) of Yeongjong. In August of the 12th year of Emperor Gojong's reign (1875), the Japanese warship Unyang-ho, which had entered Ganghwado Island and attacked Chojijin, attacked Yeongjongjin on its way back, landing troops who occupied the garrison and set fire to its government office. In response, the court elevated Incheon-bu to a defence command (bangeoyeong) and at the same time transferred Yeongjongjin, until then under the Office of the Ganghwa Commissioner (Yusu), to the jurisdiction of the Incheon defence command. In October, Yang Ju-seong, a Je-hak (second counsellor) of the Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisers), was appointed Cheomjeolje-sa of Yeongjong and restored the government office. While serving there, Yang Ju-seong rebuilt the government office, strengthened its defences and governed with benevolence; when he came to leave his post, the residents, unable to forget his kindness, erected this stele to commemorate his virtue. The stele is a simple, elongated rectangular stone with its upper corners rounded, and was erected in 1878, the 15th year of Emperor Gojong's reign. It originally stood at the top of Gondol Pass, but local residents moved it beside the village community hall, where it is now kept.
