Uiseong Twin Hodong Three-story Stone Pagoda
의성쌍호동삼층석탑 · 義城雙湖洞三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda stands prominently at the foot of a mountain to the northeast of Cheongho village. Natural bedrock serves as its base, on top of which a single-tier foundation (gidan) was built and then a three-storey body (tapsin) raised above it. Each body stone of the pagoda has corner pillars carved into it in imitation of columns, and the underside of each roof stone bears cornice brackets — four tiers on the first storey and three tiers each on the second and third. The roof stones in particular have very similar slopes on their upper and lower surfaces, giving a rather monotonous impression. The first-storey body stone is excessively tall, making the pagoda look unstable, and the roof stones, which show a degenerated style, give the whole structure a heavy, clumsy appearance. Judging from its position partway up the mountain, its use of natural bedrock as a base, and the simplicity of its carving, the pagoda is presumed to have been built during the Goryeo period.
