Anjeoksa Temple Amitabha Geungnak Assembly Painting
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Made in 1874, this work is a transitional piece bridging late Joseon Buddhist painting and modern Buddhist painting. It consists of eleven sacred figures in all, with the Buddha Amitabha at the centre flanked by the bodhisattvas Gwanseeum (Avalokiteshvara) and Daeseji (Mahasthamaprapta). The bodhisattva Munsu (Manjushri) and the child attendant Bohyeon are placed in front of them, forming a semicircular composition, while six arhats — enlightened disciples, called nahan — are depicted behind. The five figures at the front follow the tradition of late Joseon Buddhist painting, whereas the six arhat figures already reveal the character of modern Buddhist painting.
