Yudong-ri Five-story Stone Pagoda
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a stone pagoda with a five-storey body set on a single-tier base. Lotus flowers are carved on the top surface of the base's bottom stone and its uppermost stone. Pillar shapes are carved at the four corners; there is a carving of a goblin's face on the north side, an unidentifiable carved form on the west side, and a gamsil (a niche for housing a Buddhist image) hollowed into the south side. In the pagoda's body, every roof stone except that of the first storey and the fifth storey is carved from the same stone as the body stone of the storey above. Pillar shapes are carved on the body stone of each storey, and in particular a door shape and a lock are carved on the south side of the first-storey body stone. The thick roof stones have steeply sloping eaves that curve up sharply at the four corners, with three tiers of supports carved into the underside of each. At the top sits a finial in the shape of a lotus bud, added in a later period. Overall, the second-storey body stone is markedly reduced in size compared with that of the first storey, while the storeys above show almost no further reduction, suggesting that the pagoda was erected in the Goryeo period.
