Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis octagonal reliquary pagoda enshrines the relics of Jangyu Hwasang (secular name Heo Bo-ok), brother-in-law of King Suro of Garak. It is said to have been erected during the reign of King Jilji, the eighth king of Garak (451–492), when Jangyuam Hermitage was rebuilt. Over some 1,500 years, through repeated upheavals, the hermitage and its associated relics were almost entirely lost, leaving only the reliquary pagoda; however, to judge from its craftsmanship, the surviving pagoda appears to be a work of the transition from the late Goryeo to the early Joseon period. In May 1915, through the devotion of the monk Seonpo Hwasang, the present main hall of Jangyuam Hermitage was rebuilt; at the same time a stone railing was installed to protect the pagoda, and a stele recording the deeds of Jangyu Hwasang, State Preceptor of Garak, was erected so that later generations would remember him as the founder of Bulmosan Mountain's temple. The pagoda remains in relatively good condition, although part of its finial, once lost, has since been repaired.
