이양서원 · 尼陽書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIyangseowon was built to commemorate the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Gwak An-bang, Gwak Ji-un, Gwak Gyu and others; Gwak An-bang was selected as an incorruptible official in the ninth year of King Sejo's reign (1463). This academy, established in the thirty-third year of King Sukjong (1707), was demolished under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing Confucian academies, leaving only the lecture hall, outer three-bay gate and caretaker's quarters standing. In 1954 the shrine, where memorial rites are held, was restored and the other buildings repaired, and in 1982 the east and west dormitories were built. The academy now comprises eight buildings in all, including the shrine and lecture hall, as well as a spirit gate, the Eupcheongnu Pavilion and a storehouse. The outer three-bay gate and the lecture hall, where students studied, are aligned on the same axis, with the east and west dormitories arranged to the left and right. To the right of the lecture hall stands the shrine, known as Cheongbaeksa. Memorial rites are held at the academy every year in the second and eighth months of the lunar calendar.
